Estimation Engineer

Job Description

Job Summary:
The Chiller and HVAC Estimation Engineer is responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for chiller and HVAC systems in various construction and retrofit projects. This role requires extensive knowledge of HVAC systems, components, and industry standards. The engineer will work closely with project managers, design engineers, and clients to ensure that all estimates are comprehensive and meet project specifications and budget constraints.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cost Estimation:
  • Review and interpret project plans, specifications, and blueprints to understand project scope and requirements.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for chiller and HVAC systems, including equipment, materials, labor, and overhead.
  • Develop and maintain cost databases for HVAC equipment, materials, and labor rates.
  • Project Analysis:
  • Assess project feasibility and identify potential cost-saving opportunities and risks.
  • Perform technical evaluations and provide recommendations on HVAC system designs and equipment selections.
  • Collaborate with the design team to ensure accurate and efficient system designs.
  • Vendor and Contractor Coordination:
  • Solicit and review bids from suppliers and subcontractors for HVAC equipment and services.
  • Negotiate pricing and terms with vendors to obtain competitive rates.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Reporting and Documentation:
  • Prepare and present detailed and summary estimation reports to stakeholders.
  • Document estimation assumptions, methodologies, and basis of estimates.
  • Track and update project costs and compare them against estimates during the project lifecycle.
  • Revise estimates as necessary based on project changes or new information.
  • Compliance and Standards:
  • Ensure that all estimates comply with industry standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Stay updated on the latest advancements and best practices in HVAC technology and cost estimation.
  • Continuous Improvement:
  • Analyze past project performance data to improve the accuracy of future estimates.
  • Participate in post-project reviews to gather insights and lessons learned.
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development in the HVAC field.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience:
  • 3-5 years of experience in HVAC and chiller system cost estimation.
  • Proven experience with HVAC estimation software and tools.
  • Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, components, and installation practices.
  • Excellent analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification from a recognized professional body such as ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) or equivalent.
  • Experience with specific HVAC estimation software such as FastDUCT, Quick Pen, or similar.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based with occasional site visits.
  • May require extended hours during project peak times.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.
